SITE PROBLEMS

Sorry for the mess which has become my blog. I can't figure out why there is the persistent enormous gap between the title and the post of the first entry on the front page. I've tinkered with about everything I can think of and the only thing that fixed it (a "float:left" command for the post) made it work in IE but screwed it up completely in Netscape.

I have a help request into Blogger; we'll see what happens. Any advice is most welcome!

UPDATE: Thanks to everyone who extended me aid in my time of need. In the end I decided wholesale template change was an appropriate means of fixing the problem. So welcome to the "new and improved" General Glut's Globblog.

I think radical change was the best answer. The old template was pretty ugly, anyway.

hey, I got a real lift from the support that came your way on account of this "site problem". People here care that you stay in good shape.

Thanks for collecting such a helpful bunch.

Indeed, calmo, you are quite right. Thanks to EVERYBODY who extended help to me in my time of need. You guys are the greatest!

I was in the final stages of testing another solution for you between errands, dinner, and beauty sleep, but heck.

I personally believe the new content pane is way too narrow, and much harder to deal with than the full-width version. Too much scrolling and too little content in view at a time. Same for comments. But if nobody else complains I guess it's just me ...

Also the restricted width may be bad for tabular presentations. Let's see ...

Good to have you back, Glut. For a while the only thing that showed up on my computer were the words "RESISTANCE IS USELESS"... I thought you'd been hacked by Alan Greenspan.

Sorry for perhaps having sounded a bit harsh.

To make this a bit more constructive, why don't you try the following change to your style sheet. I commented out some stuff, and inserted some (marked by /**/). I commented out the "rounder" image as it may be of marginal value and I don't see it in my browser anyway.

Once you have the style section, the location of this should be trivial to find.

#content {
/* width:740px;*/
margin:0 auto;
text-align:left;
/**/background:#fff;
}
#main {
/* width:485px;*/
/* float:left;*/ /* don't float, but leave space on the right for floating sidebar */
background:#fff /*url("http://www.blogblog.com/rounders2/corners_main_bot.gif") no-repeat left bottom*/;
margin:15px 0 0;
/**/margin-right:260px; /* accomodate sidebar */
padding:0 0 10px;
color:#000;
font-size:97%;
line-height:1.5em;
}

The reason I did not see the rounder was that I was mucking around with image settings. Duh.

But try it anyway, even though it may look less artsy.

Ha. You hacked your own site! I did that accidently to mine, too, once.

This is why one has children: mine know computers and save me every time I flub it.

Not so fast Madam. There are still peculiarities here, that may not be credited so easyily to 'flubs'. Like just viewing other threads in the General's site, I get the message that 'work will be lost', even though I have posted nothing. As if lurking was more than that. Could I be transmitting some disruptive element just by viewing the comments page?
Only html equipt minds know.

cm,

Thanks for the advice -- and all the effort you put forth on my behalf. I will try to extend the width of the posts, but don't want to sacrifice the aethestic features of the new and improved template.

I'm working on it . . .

Ah, mon Général, mais non - it was the ascetic look of the previous design that was so pleasing....

Looks fantastic - good format to go with great content.

I'm with fatbear. I'm a mostly utilitarian geek, so not much in the way of aesthetics to get out of me when it's about computers. They are just tools after all (for a somewhat broad definition of "tool").
