Talk about a bad weekend for the US military, the interim government of The New IraqTM, and pretty much anybody associated with any existing power structure in the country.
  • Assassinated: Kamal al-Jarah, cultural affairs officer for the Education Ministry
  • Assassinated: Bassam Salih Kubba, Deputy Foreign Minister
  • Assassinated: Sabri al-Bayati, professor at University of Baghdad
  • Assassinated: Dalil Jabir, Kirkuk district official
  • Assassinated: Iyad Kurshid Abdel Razzak, Kurdish sheik
  • Attempted assassination: Hussein Mustafa Abdul-Kareem, head of the Iraqi border police
  • Attempted assassination: Majeed Almani Mahal, police official
Put on the list as well a rocket attack on Paul Bremer's Republican Palace, smack dab in the middle of the ultra-secure [sic] Green Zone and you've got "the dismal security situation" the the New York Times was brave enough to define.
