The European Union folds today in its nascent 'food fight' with the US over genetically modified foods. Rather than defend the import ban, which has been facing increasing pressure within the EU, the European Parliament voted to lift the ban and replace it instead with a strict labelling requirement.
According to an EU survey, 70% of Europe's public do not want GM food, and 94% want to be able to choose whether or not they eat it.
Those funny, quirky Europeans! They actually want to know what's in their food!

But even this isn't good enough for George Bush, of course, who is opposed to information and consumer choice of all sorts. Considering how the man won the 2000 US Presidential election, however, I suppose we shouldn't be surprised.
