The G8 issued its wildly anticipated fifth book in the Harry Potter series, "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix", in Evian, France today . . . oh, sorry, wrong press release.

The G8 issued its predictable milquetoast communique today based on the theme, "Don't Worry, Be Happy". The statement was peppered with rosy claims such as "major downside risks have receded and the conditions for a recovery are in place. We are confident in the growth potential of our economies." without a single comment on relative currency values. Commentary on "Prevention and resolution of financial crisis" mentioned only "emerging markets" (nice that crisis is always somebody else's problem) without a whit on the dollar, euro or yen.

We can only hope these people are working behind the scenes, perhaps uncovering information on those missing WMDs in Iraq and finding Nicole Brown Simpson's real killer at the same time. The evidence doesn't suggest it, however, and when George Bush can only manage a day at the summit before getting back to his real interests, it's safe to say there is little to no high-level interest in the status of the global economy in the White House.
